What did I just finish reading?
I have had an excellent past two weeks of reading. I finished Scythe by Neal Shusterman which I have owned and shelved for at least two years. This first book in a series introduces the reader to a world without pain, hunger or death. The overpopulation issue is handled by Scythes, individuals with the power of death. Two young people have been chosen as Scythe apprentices and their lives are forever altered by the entrance of death into their existence. I had no intention of enjoying this book and it won me over completely. For a more comprehensive review, check here.
I also found this adorable non fiction book, Black Cats and Evil Eyes, a Book of Old Fashioned Superstition by Chloe Rhodes. This slender book holds the history for phrases and actions that are based on superstition. Some are absolutely weird (drinking out of an animal skull will cure epilepsy) and some I do all of the time (see a penny, pick it up!). This book is perfect for stocking your brain full of fun tidbits and my review is here.
My last book has probably been read by everyone save me, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Another book that I have owned for years but hadn’t read, this book is wondrous. I loved the story of Bod, the boy growing up in the graveyard, and the circumstances surrounding his unusual life. This book is a five star, 100% huggable book and I cannot stop talking about it. My review is here if you are interested.
I also consumed all 8 issues of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. If you have run out of Riverdale episodes or are wanting to get a jump on Sabrina related works before the show debuts on Netflix, this are fantastic. They are NOT the Sabrina the Teenage Witch of my childhood. These are horror comics and they are dark. But, since I am consumed this month by Frighteningly Good Reads they were utterly perfect reading.
What am I Currently Reading?
I am nearly half way through the sequel to Hocus Pocus. It is a very light read which does not keep my attention very long but is still fun for an end-of-October middle grade book. I am obsessed with The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco. This book tells the story of a magical girl who can raise the dead. She discovers her powers when she accidentally brings her brother back from the grave and the action doesn’t stop there. I only have 100 pages remaining.
What do I plan to read next?
The only book I have left for Frightening Good Reads is Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerry Maniscalco. I did not realize that it was a sequel to Stalking Jack the Ripper and so the conundrum is: do I read this book or save it until after I read the first in the series? If anyone is familiar with the books I would love some advice!
Tell me, please!
What is on your WWW list?
Oh, I loved The Graveyard Book so much! It’s such a good book! The Bone Witch sounds very interesting too. I don’t think I’ve seen that one before.
Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

I am still totally in love with The Graveyard Book. I need people to come over to my house, sit down and really talk to me about how much we love this book. Love your blog!

Goodluck with your reads… 🙂 Regarding with the Hunting Prince Dracula, you need to read Book 1. Even though the MCs deal with new case in Book 2, still Book 1 explains a lot who they are and how they end up in Book 2’s setting. I don’t think you’ll enjoy book 2 that much without reading Book 1. 🙂 Speaking of this series, i need to purchase book 3.

I’m on hold at the library for Stalking Jack the Ripper! I think with almost every series, you need to read book 1 before book 2.

That is my belief as well and, as a weird purist, I know I need to start at the beginning. Thanks for visiting and for the advice!

I am so curious about the Sabrina show but did hear that these are very dark. Still debating whether I’ll end up binging it or not…but I probably will haha.
Here’s my WWW if you’re interested 🙂

I cannot emphasize enough, it is SO DARK. Growing up on TGIF gave me a certain idea of Sabrina and its not that Sabrina is so different as the other characters around her are just so dark. But, I loved it. It is like loving classic Archie and Riverdale at the same time. Totally possible, you just have to prep yourself!
Thanks for visiting. I can’t wait to read your WWW!

I do not like end of the world books and while Scythe is not entirely that it felt like it at the start. Let me know if you get a chance to read it!

I don’t know if this makes you feel better or just makes me look bad, but I have never read anything by Neil Gaiman. In 2019, I am going to focus on reading from one author per month, and he is going to be one of them, especially since he is so prolific. I’m glad you enjoyed The Graveyard Book! I’ll put it on my Neil Gaiman list.

It does make me feel better! I got him confused with another author and declared that I “hated” him and I was so embarrassed when I realized my mistake. Thank goodness I did though because he has some amazing books! Let me know if you read any others you enjoy. I already have Norse Mythology and Anasi Boys lined up.

The author of Black Cats has several other books that I simple must own but the #1 best must be her book on Collective Nouns. How fun will that be to add to my repertoire?!

Wow, congrats on your productive reading week!
Oooh, a book on superstition sounds really interesting!
I haven’t read Hunting Prince Dracula yet, but I’ve read Stalking Jack the Ripper. It was a decent read. I would say that if you’re ever planning on reading the first book, read it before the second. If you jump right into the second, they’ll probably spoil the plot twist of the first.

That has been the general consensus and so I have shelved Hunting Prince Dracula until I can get my hands on a copy of Stalking Jack the Ripper. Thank you for visiting!
