What Did I Just Finish Reading?
This week I had the joy of reading One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus and The Bride Test by Helen Hoang. Both books were addictive reads. One of Us is Lying took my completely by surprise – I didn’t expect to enjoy it and found I could not put it down! You can read my full review of this YA thriller here.
The Bride Test by Helen Hoang is the second in her series following The Kiss Quotient. As a contemporary romance this was an enjoyable read. I am still mulling over my feelings about the main character, Esme, but I can say for certain that I thoroughly enjoying this book.
What am I Currently Reading?
Ummm…oops. Six books is too many but I can’t put any of these down. Well, to be honest, I still haven’t finished Hamlet because I put it somewhere very safe (meaning: I lost it in my house). Similarly, I had to return The Color of Magic to the library but I purchased a copy this weekend – nothing comes between me and my Terry Pratchett! So, I suppose the universe has temporarily shaved my active list to four. Four is much more manageable.
I am about 40% of the way into The President is Missing as an audiobook. Dennis Quaid is a little uneven in his delivery but I forgive him because picturing him as the President is quite fun. This book has me furiously cleaning while I listen. It is an intense action-packed story.
I am half-way through Dot Journaling: A Practical Guide and will probably finish it today. It is an easy read that has really helped me understand the mystery around bullet journaling. I always want to bullet journal but when I try is feels uselessly complicated! Re-writing my to-do list makes me feel like I am in grade school being punished for something. I Will Pay My Bills. I Will Pay My Bills. I Will Pay My Bills. This book has helped me simplify the idea while still allowing it to be creative. That’s the exact balance I am trying to achieve!
I picked up a copy of Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy on a whim this weekend and I’m more than 100 pages in. This is middle grade story has nine books and features a dead skeleton and a teenage girl who have teamed up to thwart evil. I always like to keep on top of middle grade books so I am ready with the recommendation for kids and this one is excellent so far.
I am also reading The Power by Naomi Alderman. I stayed up for hours reading it the other night. I am only 30% into the story but I can already tell you that it is intense. The idea that all girls have the power of electricity that comes from their own bodies has me really wishing for our own super powers. I have relegated this to day-time only reading because I can not calm down while reading it.
What Will I Read Next?
I’ve made the mistake of requesting too many books from my library so I have these three audiobooks waiting for me. I will probably choose only one because I really need to attack my massive TBR as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I haven’t read Skullduggery Pleasant, and people keep telling me I need to, so I need to pick up that series at some point. I’ll be interested to see what you think when you finish! There’s an Artemis Fowl movie coming out … this year, I think? So that’s one book on my near TBR so I can watch the movie, so I recommend that one! Even though my recommendation means nothing because I’ve not actually read it yet … but I assume it’s going to get some renewed attention because of the movie lol.

I read Artemis years ago but not the whole series and I will admit that the movie coming out has me intrigued. The audiobooks are amazing because the author does all those wonderful accents so well.

Hah! I will proceed with caution. I seem to have 20 series in the works right now. If I had an ounce of self-control I would finish one before I started one of this magnitude.

I haven’t read any of these books! I’m tempted by The President is Missing – I’m wondering how much of it Clinton wrote?

I am almost 85% through and there are certain things you can almost hear President Clinton saying. There is definitely some facts that only a President would know. It is certainly action packed! I’m telling you, I actually scrubbed my walls while listening because I can’t bear to sit still!

The Power gets loads of mixed reviews and as I read father I can see why. Still, I am enjoying it and loving talking about the idea of what the world would look like if women were the stronger sex!

So happy to see that you enjoyed One of Us Is Lying! I really loved that book when I read it. It was definitely hard to put down. I also have the Dot Journaling book. I got it for Christmas, because I really wanted to get into bullet journaling this year. I haven’t had the chance to read it or start my journal yet, but it would be nice to read it soon so I can start a journal for next year. I totally agree about it feeling so complicated, which is why I have yet to even attempt it even though I pin hundreds of journal page ideas on Pinterest, lol. I hope you enjoy your upcoming reads!

So many pins right?!? My review is up tomorrow for my NonFiction Friday and, honestly, I say go for it. My plan is to try a little of everything so my 2020 journal is gorgeous and pin-able.

Impressed by your six books on the go! I find 4 is my absolute max or I get a bit overwhelmed! I really liked The Power, thought it had interesting ideas.

Don’t be impressed – 4 is my favorite number as well. 6 means I’ve done something stupid (losing Hamlet) or irresponsible (requesting too many things from the library).
I feel that I will agree with you on The Power. Some books are better to discuss than read and I am fairly desperate to talk about this book already.

You have piqued my interest towards One of Us is Lying. I will have to check it out. I’d like to hear what you think about Less too. I read it, and thought it was good – I just didn’t think it was Pulitzer Prize worthy. But it is good – hope you enjoy it!

I have heard this a LOT about Less so I am going in with minimal expectations. I have checked it out and returned it to the library no less than 5 times.

Yay for Skulduggery Pleasant, I don’t know why these don’t get mentioned more, such fun reads. I went to one of the author’s events and I have never seen so many young boys at a book event (I was most definitely out of place).

I’d never heard of Skulduggery and I was SHOCKED to see how many there were. I wonder as well why they are not more widely discussed.

The Bride Test’s biggest complaints (as far as I can tell) are that the main character leaves her daughter behind and its to smutty. If you like The Kiss Quotient then it will not be too smutty. Likewise, if we can all remember that some people have to make difficult choices, the first problem goes away. It won’t be my favorite read of the year but it was a fun one!
The President is Missing is giving me heart arrhythmia. My Apple Watch keeps thinking I’m exercising.

Glad you’re enjoying Colour of Magic. I’m on the third Tiffany Aching book now and loving them, Pratchett was just such a clever writer wasn’t he?!

Some books just don’t work do they? I have picked up highly recommended books from friends only to wonder what they were so excited about. Life’s too short to spend on books that don’t grab you!

I hope you enjoy Artemis Fowl! The first book came out when I was twelve and I followed the series right through into my early twenties so it’s a bit special for me.
I might have to check out the Dot Journaling book – I sort of have a half-hearted bullet journal at work (I’m the same as you – I find the whole concept quite overwhelming to get started) but I would like to do more with it!

The Dot Journaling was revolutionary in helping me not make it so complicated! In the end, its just supposed to be a fun thing you write in but I think the pressure of the two extremes kept me from enjoying it.
I can see why Artemis is special – I love the series already!
