WWW Wednesday: October 2, 2019

It’s time for WWW Wednesday! This meme is hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words.  Just answer the following three questions and leave a link to your own WWW post or a feel free to comment with your responses. The best part is visiting other participants to see what they are reading. This week I am going to try to pop into every other participant’s WWW and really ruin my to be read list.

What Did I Recently Finish Reading?

As it is now October I am deep into Frighteningly Good Reads 2019. If you enjoy reading spooky, scary or chilling books, join me! Because of that theme I am letting go of my usual reads and embracing everything frightening.

Last week I did finish The Dugout by Meghan Quinn. This was an insomnia and accidental-kindle-unlimited situation. The cover is….not great. But, I had read Meghan Quinn before and liked her romances. The Dugout did not disappoint. It was a great story,  likable and complex characters and a fairly realistic story (tricky in romances, right?). I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I also read The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Walton. This was one creepy and scary story. Additionally, it had the worst fictional mother I have encountered in years. I featured it as my FrighteningGoodReads #1 and you can read a full review here.

I also did a quick re-read of one of my favorite books, The Witches by Roald Dahl. It will be my FGR#3 and the full review will be up later today.

What am I Currently Reading?

Here Be Monsters! is the story that the movie Boxtrolls is based upon. That, and Ghost Knight, are the middle grade books I am reading in lieu of my lighter reading at night (and in the middle of the night should insomnia strike).

I am listening and tandem reading Gemina, the second in the fabulous Illuminae Files and loving every minute. I am nearly half way through the story and it has me on the edge of my seat.

I continue to work through The Art and Science of Hand Reading. At this rate, I will be happy to finish it by the end of 2019.

Finally, I have started Frankenstein! This is the book I am most excited to read this week.

What Will I Read Next?

The Legend of Sleepy Hallow is still on my immediate TBR. But, I am also waiting for a lot of books to come into the library so the only thing I can guarantee is that it will be spooky!

    1. I know I should love Christmas best, and I really do enjoy the holiday season, but Halloween in my heart. Frighteningly Good Reads is just an excuse to buy more books, snuggle up, and really bask in the beauty of Halloween all month long!

      1. Off the top of my head, I believe there are some changes made in relation to his love interest, but beyond that I’m not sure. I know that the 1831 text is apparently the one that became more popular, but some go to bat for the 1818 text as a more pure form of Shelley’s vision for the story. Can’t say much either way, myself. I loved what I read nonetheless.

  4. Despite the title I had no idea The Price Guide was a creepy read. I’m definitely adding it to my tbr. I think I’m also going to be picking up Gemina soon. I just got the audio at the weekend and am really looking forward to it.

    Have to confess I was not a fan of Frankenstein although I suspect I’m in the minority. It may just be that I listened to it on audio and the narrator didn’t work for me but I’m afraid I got bored and gave up.

    1. I think I tried Frankenstein at some point in early college and had the same experience. I am trying to go into it with low expectations and hope to be wowed.

      I hope you check out The Prince Guide! Witches are always fun but that Mother…she’s going to stick with me.

  6. I’ve never read The Witches, but it looks super cute! Oooh, I’ve never heard of Ghost Knight, but that sounds really good, too! I’ve only ever read Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, and I didn’t really like it, but I wanted to give her another chance, so maybe I’ll try that one. And yaaay Gemina. ❤ I'm so glad you're enjoying it.

  7. I want to reread the first couple books in the Illuminae Files. I waited too long after the second book before reading the 3rd. I’ll be curious to hear what you think of Frankenstein. I read it last year.

  9. I’ve always wanted to read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow but never got my hands on it… I think I’ve read Frankenstein when I was in grade school… The rest are new to me but they also look interesting. Nice list.

    1. Thank you! I have also always wanted to read The Legend of Sleepy Hallow but I am determined to do it this year! Every year I fall a little short with classics and I wanted to round out my list a little more this year.

  11. You literally have most of the genres in your list. I envy your reads. hehe. I also wanted to read Frankenstein this Halloween but I can’t find my copy. I think someone borrowed it way back when I was still studying. It was the only time I let others borrow my books and only classic ones because I was never a fan of classic, except Dracula. Maybe I’ll just reread that instead.

    By the way, I don’t know what happened but it looks like I’m not following your blog yet which is ridiculous because I know this isn’t the first time I visited your site. Maybe a WordPress glitch. This isn’t the first time this happens that I need to follow someone again. 🙂

    1. How dare WordPress try to keep us apart!!

      The only book I couldn’t find this year was a spooky romance. Those are often hilarious and my favorite finds for this holiday.

      I have been taking people’s picture when they borrow my books. That way I can really remember who has what. I delete the picture when they bring the book back but Im always tempted to make a board of shame (like the retail theft ones) for people that keep my books! Meh, that might be going too far.
