WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

I am zipping through D-Day Girls by Sarah Rose. This book is like Code Girls, but instead of codebreakers, D-Day Girls is a fantastic overview of female spies sent behind the lines on the Western Front.

I’ve started A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens this week. How have I gone so long in life and never read this story??

I am nearly finished with The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester a nonfiction book about the two men, one a scholar and one a convicted murdered locked in a mental health facility, who were the main contributors to the Oxford English Dictionary.

I cannot stop reading Matt Haig. I’ve moved onto The Girl that Saved Christmas after finishing The Boy Called Christmas. I’m loving this series, especially right now at Christmas.

The library also delivered on my Enola! I am half-way through The Case of the Cryptic Crinoline which is the fifth book in the Enola series. Every book is better than the last.

This week I found a ton of time to read and, happily, almost everything I read was great! Calm Christmas by Beth Kempton is a fantastic book for anyone who has struggled to balance the vision of what they want their Christmas to look like with the reality that hits everyone every year. My full review is here.

I read The Lotterys More or Less by Caroline Hadilaksono. This middle grade book was the second in the series (my fault) but it wasn’t for me. If you are looking for a super diverse book about a quirky family exploring the definition of tradition and how it changes.

Nutcracked by Susan Adrian is a quick early middle grade read about Georgie, a twelve year old that has finally won the roll of Clara in the Nutcracker. But, every time she holds the Nutcracker doll she is pulled into an alternate realm where the Nutcracker’s fight is all too real.

After reading What If? I had my eye peeled for more wacky science books and The Truth about Santa, Wormholes and What Really Happens on Christmas Eve by Gregory Mone felt perfect. While the science and technology was interesting I didn’t love the way the author painted Santa as a less than kind person.

A Boy Called Christmas was perfect through! Matt Haig’s story of the boy who would become Santa had the same dark feel of Roald Dahl or Lemony Snicket. If you are looking for a middle grade book but with some darker themes and potty humor, this one is perfect. I did a mini-review and movie pairing of this book and Nutcracked here.

I also finished How to Spell Chanukah…and Other Holiday Dilemmas edited by Emily Franklin. This book’s collection of short stories from a variety of voices was an interesting read – especially since most of the author’s main complaints about Christmas are ones I am guilty of every year. Not all of the stories were perfect but I loved reading them.
