WWW Wednesday: February 3, 2021

WWW Wednesday is the post I look forward to every week. I am slowly getting more organized in the reading and reviewing after the chaos I created in January but, as you will soon see, I haven’t rid myself of all the ridiculousness quite yet.

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

Okay – don’t judge. I know (I really do) that this looks like the currently reading pile of a crazy person. Lemme just explain.

One Crazy Summer, The Art of War, and 7 Habits of High Effective Teens are all buddy reads with different people. I’m only reading 10-30 pages of each book everyday to support my buddy. These are all super interesting books and easy reads.

Dare to Lead by Brene Brown, I am listening to as an audiobook. Except for her wildly overuse of her made up word “rumble” her advice on how to be a supportive and vulnerable leader while still being effective has me riveted. Whether you are currently in a leadership role in your professional career or just looking on ways to identify and develop leadership skills, this book is full of ideas.

I have been listening to A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court as an audiobook and I am going to have to switch to physical book. The narrator is doing some kind of weird Mark Twain impression and I just want to poke him – hard. I just got the time traveller into Arthur court but hope to continue more today.

I have finally cracked into both How to Read Literature Like a Professor and Three Ordinary Girls. This space on my overcrowded shelf was only made possible by some judicious DNFing but, I made it! I am 100 pages in Literature and it is fascinating. Basically, he says that reading more will make you a better reader but identifies patterns to look for during reading or writing that will make you feel so smart.

I just cracked into Three Ordinary Girls yesterday but I am excited to finally have another female spy story in my hands.

WHAT DID I RECENTLY FINISH READING?

The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp by Rick Yancey was so surprisingly engaging and fun that I cannot stop thinking about Alfred. This story of an oversized underachiever becoming entangled in the vast underworld of people trying to seize Excaliber, and those brave men trying to defend it, was delightful. My full review is here.

I just finished the middle grade novel Shuri by Nic Stone and I could not put it down. I read it while my food was cooking, wandering around my apartment, and I even got up a little earlier this morning so I could finish it. I hadn’t realized how much I missed Wakanda until I started this book but, if you need a little trip there as well, this book was awesome.

I did DNF both Tiny Habits and A History of Sweets. Sweets was so boring and poorly organized that I was both confused and exhausted trying to follow along. It reads like a very (very) long research paper. Meanwhile, Tiny Habits was so simple it felt like a waste of time to read it. Loads of annecdotal stories of the author saving someone’s life through the break down of a chore into manageable chunks was annoying but not as enraging as him naming everything he “discovered.” Perhaps Fogg has been researching this for a long time but I would still recommend Atomic Habits over this one.
