I spent a lot of time last week reading tips about coping with COVID quarantine. One of the tips that really struck me was, when things are not working, PIVOT. Turn away from things that make you frustrated and find something new. I don’t do well without a bunch of projects but I also struggle when life lacks balance (which I doubt anyone has right now!) So, if I started a book and it didn’t capture me I pivoted and put it back. I think we can all agree it is truly hard to put a book down, even one we hate, but this new method has really worked for me. All I had to do was read the first three chapters (an old bit of advice from my Mom) before I put them on my Goodreads. Like magic, I was reading again. Now I just need to be more disciplined about posting…

WHAT AM I CURRENTLY READING?

This week I am working through Tap! The Greatest Tap Dance Stars and their Stories 1900-1955. I love nonfiction because it is easy to pick up, read a chapter, put it down and repeat that pattern again and again. This book is keeping me company until I can get back to physical tap class.

Doll Bones by Holly Black is a middle grade thriller that has been sitting on my shelf forever. A nice possessed doll book, for whatever reason, feels right today.

I have also started re-reading The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I have a beautiful illustrated copy that I have never read and it is absolutely wonderful to spend time with this book again.

Finally, I started listening to The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae this morning. It is for a new entirely online bookclub I have joined. I’m only 20 minutes into it but planning to re-organize my closet later while Issa keeps me company.

WHAT DID I RECENTLY FINISH READING?

See? The pivot worked for me! I finished seven books this week, three of them off my MagicalReadathon TBR. All of them either romances or murderous thrillers. The pendulum of my mood may be swinging wildly but books (thankfully) don’t judge me!

The Flatshare and The Unhoneymooners were both contemporary romances that I had other people recommend to me and I loved them both SO much.

So, You Want to Be Canadian was my short book requirement for my readathon and it just further deepened my crush on Canada.

The Real Michael Swann by Bryan Reardon is a book I got from a subscription quite some time ago and put it aside because thrillers are not my favorite. For some reason the thriller and murder books seem to be perfectly matching my heart rate at whole sections of the day and I was surprised by how quickly I tore through this book.

I finished And Then There Were None on my kindle and I was…..so confused. It just ended. Like, who was the mastermind? Thankfully, I was complaining about this to a friend and they pointed out that there is a letter at the end of the book. But it wasn’t in my kindle version! I finally got to read the real ending.

I also finished Emma last night just minutes before my audiobook loan ended. I’m not sure I would have loved it as much as I did if I hadn’t already seen the new movie because it is pretty repetitive. I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as Pride and Prejudice but it was still a lovely read.

WHAT WILL I READ NEXT?

Honestly? Who knows! But, I was thinking of working through this book every morning over coffee. If I do just one object a day I will be done by the end of July and, hopefully, the world will look very normal by then.
