I finally got my wish and the weather here broke by the end of the month. There was even a rainy day that I spent inside snuggled up while reading. I know that I would struggle to live somewhere without seasons and by the end of February I will tire of reading inside. Right now though, I am pretty happy for the decreased humidity.
BACK TO SCHOOL READING

This was a fun month of reading! For this theme I tried to read anything that involved a school or training facilities.
The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes was a fun read about teenagers who are talented at identifying liars and reading emotions. Inexplicably, the FBI needs these high schooler’s help. This is a ploy I love to hate in YA and Middle Grade – adults who need kids and manage to separate them from their parents. In real like, I would be irate. In fiction? I’ll also it. This as a great audiobook that kept me on the edge of my seat.
The Official Sidekick Handbook was silly. I picked it up at Half Priced Book in the joke section. It was very much like one of my favorite super hero movies, Sky High. I love thinking about side kicks and wondering if there were an option, which would I be? Hero or Hero Support? This book was a quick read.
Bomb fit into the theme since all the scientists gathered together in camps to create this deadly weapon. This graphic novel version of the Steve Sheinkin’s book was a great primer on the building of the atomic bomb, and the attempts to steal it. My only complaint is that every single character looked the same. If you were curious to learn more after Oppenheimer, this might be for you.
Amari and the Despicable Wonders is the third in what is now a five part series. I have been so excited for this book since I believed it to be the final chapter. I love this series but, I will admit, this book would likely have been better if B.B. Alston had given us a great ending. This one felt like a long middle section.
The Green Ember is a middle grade fantasy series that features rabbits. Heather and her brother Picket live a happy live in the woods with their family until they are attacked and they have to relocate to a hidden city to prepare for the coming war. Honestly, this book surprised me. I struggled a bit picturing rabbits doing battle but once I conquered that, the story and adventure were top notch.
Finally, I had the chance to read the much anticipated Somewhere Beyond the Sea. This is the second in the Cerulean Chronicles. This book, like the first, is a paper hug. There were times when, dare I say it?, the book was a bit tooooo uplifting. In these trying times, I’m all for it.
DID NOT FINISH

No shade to Stuart, but I got half way through this audiobook and I wanted all the characters to die. If someone can convince me to spend 6 more hours on this, I will. Otherwise, DNF.
HOLDOVER

This book I refuse to give up on but it will take me some time. I plan to continue reading and hope to finish by the end of Oct.
Tell me, please! What did you read in September?

I read 20 books in September because I had Covid and could do nothing else! I enjoyed Benjamin Myers’ “Rare Singles” and Shannon Downey’s “Let’s Move the Needle” the most – so one novel and one craftivism manual.
