This may sound cliche but honestly, it’s true, I laughed, I cried, I hugged the heck out of this book. This book captured my imagination and my heart simultaneously. Is this praise too high? Absolutely not. With messages of love, acceptance, standing up for yourself and the people you love, and the beauty of finding your people, I simple cannot sing me praises of this book highly enough. I’ll need to reign in or I will run the risk of overselling it.

But I can’t seem to stop myself!

I’m struggling to not spoil a single thing about this book. I want to talk about each child at the orphanage and how I love them all. I want to sing the praises of the adults in their lives who are working to build a predicable and safe environment. I’m fairly desperate to rail against the systems, forces, and prejudices that keeps these children’s lives from being peaceful. But, truly, the magic of this book is the unraveling mystery of what is happening on the island and what the future holds for all the characters. And I wouldn’t want to deprive a single person of the adventure I had reading this book.

What I really want is for everyone to read this book and feel the acceptance and love that is found within its pages. It’s not really a fantasy story – even though some of the elements are fantastical. It’s a book about seeing yourself the way other people do and finding your family.
