A TEENY TINY (NOT) GINGERBREAD HOUSE

As a self-proclaimed “candy fiend” I have always been excited by anything candy related. I integrate candy into my vacations and always have some close at hand. But one candy-related item I just could never get behind is the gingerbread house. Don’t get me wrong, they are gorgeous! But, I had two realizations that ruined making them for me. First, gingerbread is not tasty. Second, to make those epically decorated houses requires a skill that is well beyond me.

Still…..the candy beckoned. I bought one of those kits at the craft store. Boo. Fail. That candy is nasty. I tried making the houses out of graham crackers. They were delicious but oh, so delicate and therefore a mess. Finally, I had an epiphany……Rice Krispie treats!

After making the treats, I stacked a couple of squares onto each other. You could even just buy the pre-made treats. Remember, the goal for this Blogmas is to have simple Christmas fun. You like my aluminum foil doily??

Three Rice Krispie squares sit stacked on top of each other on a piece of scalloped aluminum foil.

Then I shaped it and iced it. It was so easy! I thought about going back to crop the picture so you wouldn’t see the icing I got on my oh-so-fancy doily but, I just didn’t care! I also got icing in my hair but no one needs to see that.

The Rice Krispie treats have been shaped and covered in white icing.

Then, to the best part. I know what everyone is thinking and the answer is yes: I did have all this candy sitting around. Some people have fancy liquor cabinets, I have a well-stocked candy drawer.

The iced house has a sour candy single roof, orange Pez shutters, a pink Pez door and a small orange Sour Patch kid outside.

Ta-da! The finished product is never quite what I envisioned but that is why I am not a professional baker and cake decorator. This project was exactly what I wanted it to be, simple, fun, and Christmassy.

Tell me, please! Do you enjoy Gingerbread Houses?
